Eye-opening AI advancements will undoubtedly produce more realistic results for photo-conscious social media users.

Facebook researchers have developed a new tool which uses artificial intelligence to retouch the eyes within an image.

The new tool is comparable to Adobe's "content aware fill tool", making an estimation of an image's item surroundings and filling in or removing objects based on the capabilities or analysis and prediction.
Facebook's ingenuity uses a generative adversarial network (GAN) that teaches two separate machine learning systems.

One system is trained to recognize whether images of open eyes are real, while the other exists to implement a solution. The latter system is attempting to build the most convincing images possible in an effort to mislead the former.

In testing, according to TechCrunch, the results are quite convincing, fooling testers more often than not into believing the computer-generated eyes were real.

Particularly, Facebook researchers have created an AI that can automatically replace closed eyes with open ones in your pictures.

The scientists trained the AI with photos of people with their eyes open to learn how the subjects' eyes organically appear. After learning a person's eye shape and features, the AI works to replace closed eyes with artificially generated eyes in blinking photos.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018 also contains a feature called Open Eyes that also opens closed eyes by copying open eyes from other photos of the same subject
